As publisher of Macaroni KID Gardner-Spring Hill-Paola, I spend my weeks connecting local parents with the events, businesses, and resources that make life around here a little easier. And every August, the question I get asked the most is some version of "wait, when does school actually start?"

So I put together this guide just for us. Macaroni KID Gardner-Spring Hill-Paola proudly serves families in Baldwin City, Bucyrus, De Soto, Edgerton, Eudora, Fontana, Gardner, Greeley, Hillsdale, Lacygne, Lane, Lawrence, Louisburg, New Century, Osawatomie, Ottawa, Paola, Parker, Princeton, Rantoul, Spring Hill, Stilwell, and Wellsville, which means we cover a lot of different school districts. Below you'll find first day of school dates for 2026-2027, district websites, a back to school checklist, answers to the questions I hear most, and some of our favorite back to school resources to help your family ease into the new year.

🎒 First Day of School 2026-2027

Quick heads up: several districts stagger their start days, so new students, kindergartners, 6th graders, and 9th graders sometimes start a day before everyone else. I've noted that where it applies, but always double check with your specific school.

✅ Your Back to School Checklist for Our Area

Feeling that "did I forget something" panic? You are not alone, mama. Here is a quick rundown to help our Gardner, Spring Hill, Paola, De Soto, Louisburg, Lawrence, Ottawa, and surrounding area families cross the finish line before that first bell rings.

• Complete registration and enrollment (don't forget updated immunization records)
• Bus route or carpool plan confirmed
• Free and reduced meal application submitted, if applicable
• School supply list printed and shopping done
• Emergency contact and medical forms turned in
• Physicals or sports paperwork scheduled, if your kiddo is playing this year
• First day outfit picked out (and a backup, because kids change their minds)

When do I need to register my kids for school?

If you have got littles heading back into any of our area districts this fall, now is the time to lock in enrollment. Start dates across our coverage area range from mid-August into the following week, so check the table above for your specific district. Whether you are new to Gardner, Spring Hill, Paola, De Soto, or one of our smaller communities, or you are just re-enrolling returning students, most districts want proof of residency, immunization records, and birth certificates on hand. Don't wait until the week before. Registration lines get long fast. Check your district's family portal to complete enrollment online and confirm your child's home campus based on your address.

Will my child have a bus route this year? 

One of the most searched questions every August: "does my kid qualify for the bus?" Bus eligibility across our districts is typically based on how far you live from your assigned campus, so it varies by neighborhood, even within the same town. Most districts open their bus route finder tools in early August, so keep an eye on your district's transportation page for your child's stop and pickup time. Pro mom tip: bus routes can shift year to year as neighborhoods grow, so don't assume last year's stop is still active. Double check before day one!

How do I apply for free or reduced school meals?

With grocery bills stretching every family's budget, don't skip this one, mama. Families across our districts can apply for free or reduced price meals through their district's food service or child nutrition department, and many let you apply online before the first day. Even if you didn't qualify last year, it is worth reapplying since eligibility is based on current household income and size. Applications typically open in early August, right alongside registration, so it is an easy one to knock out at the same time.
