Mom of the Month: Meet Zoey – Owner of Prism Portraits Photography
We love celebrating local moms who turn their passion into something meaningful for families in our community! This month, we’re excited to introduce Zoey Thorpe, a mom and the creative eye behind Prism Portraits Photography. Zoey specializes in capturing authentic, joy-filled moments for families across the Gardner area and beyond, preserving memories that will be cherished for years to come.
Tell us a little about yourself and your family.
I’m originally from Missouri, born and raised kinda all over. I moved to Kansas in 2019 when I met my husband. We have three kiddos: my step daughter Olivia, (who is almost 10 and constantly keeps us on our toes), Bryson (who will be four this fall who is absolutely the most thoughtful and sweetest boy I know) and our newest addition, Emery, who is three months!
What inspired you to start your businesses?
I've always had a passion for photography. It started in high school where I did photojournalism, lots of sports photography, photographing plays and anything I could volunteer for! I absolutely loved capturing small moments that captured the night. I won some awards for my football photography as those were probably my favorite to take. Then I stopped after high school since my dad ended up in the hospital and I had to take care of my siblings. I picked everything back up again in 2023 after my husband bought me a camera, so I started relearning everything and using our son as a model.
What does a typical day look like for you as a mom and business owner?
My typical day is filled with my two kiddos at home with me. I homeschool my three year old and when I do have session juggling the editing and keeping my house put together.
What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?
The most rewarding part has been seeing the absolute joy families have during sessions and what we can end up capturing even in some tough moments.
What challenges have you faced balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship?
Finding the balance has been pretty hard especially with a newborn and toddler but routine and structure has really helped. Creating a schedule and routine for my three year old has helped so much from the beginning, especially after having our newborn.
What advice would you give to other moms thinking about starting their own business?
Go for it! You never know what will happen if you don’t take a chance!
How do you and your family like to spend time together when you're not working?
We absolutely love board games or being outside! My three year old would live outside if we let him rain or shine he is always asking to be out!
